A PCS date is a vehicle deadline. Insurance, tax, parking, and whoever is on the registration do not stop because Household Goods booked a pickup. If the car is still in your name when you fly, the next ticket, shaken letter, or buyer problem can follow you.

Civilian residents use one checklist: sell your car before leaving Japan. Military households add a second stack: SOFA / VRO / PMV plates versus a Japanese 車検証. Those are not the same office. CFA Sasebo: Sasebo VRO. Other Japan bases: use your current vehicle-office handout. We will not invent hours or form numbers.

KMC JAPAN helps customers in Sasebo and across Kyushu find Japanese used cars, including affordable kei cars, compact cars, SUVs, minivans and hybrids — and we buy or export when you leave. We work from Ogori, Fukuoka (about 1.5–2 hours from CFA Sasebo). We are not an official Navy vendor, exchange, or VRO.

English export / sale questions Domestic buyback (kmccar.com)

Used-car appraisal of a compact Japanese car before a sale
Get a yen offer in writing. On-base “cash Friday” with no name change is how cars stay stuck in your name.

First: which papers is the car on?

  • SOFA plates (VRO/PMV) — you leave through that office’s deregistration / sale rules and their insurance list. KMC cannot stamp VRO.
  • Japanese 車検証 — 名義変更, 輸出抹消, or 永久抹消 at the transport branch / 軽協会. Guide: transfer ownership

If you are not sure which you have, look at the plates and the booklet in the glove box, then ask VRO and do not assume a Sasebo lot can “just switch it.”

Four exits that actually close the file

1. Sell in Japan

Fastest for most tours. Incoming families, on-base ads, and civilian 買取 all work if the name actually changes (or VRO records the new keeper). Have 車検証 or VRO packet, keys, and a honest shaken date. Dead shaken kills the price: shaken 2026.

Japanese-plate buyback: kmccar.com. Common models still sell: Navy family shortlist, family cars in Japan.

2. Export it (take it or ship to family)

Export erasure in Japan, then RoRo or container. Destination rules (US 25-year / EPA / DOT, age bans, RHD) are your import job — we will not pretend CBP pre-approved your N-BOX. Price language: FOB vs CIF vs CNF. Personal-export vs auction-export uses the right contract: proxy bidding is for buying, not for a car you already own.

Email chassis, destination port, and fly-out date. Do not start the week HHG rolls.

3. Transfer to someone who stays

A roommate with keys is not a transfer. Incoming sponsor + VRO, or 名義変更 + 車庫証明 for Japanese plates: parking drafts. Cancel 任意 when the insurer allows: insurance guide.

4. Scrap

When the offer is scrap. Keep recycle / deletion papers. Still tell VRO if the car was on SOFA plates so their file matches reality.

PCS timeline (practical, not an order)

  1. When orders drop: decide sell / ship / transfer / scrap. Photograph the car and both sides of the 車検証 or VRO docs
  2. ~6–8 weeks: quotes (kmccar and/or KMC export). Ask VRO what they need to close your plates
  3. ~4 weeks: buyer or shipping slot. Do not wait for the last duty day
  4. ~2 weeks: name change or 輸出抹消 or VRO out-process. Cancel parking and ETC
  5. Before the terminal: PDFs of every stamp. No “my buddy will sort it”

Scams and shortcuts

Cash with no paperwork, “I’ll register it after you fly,” and random export brokers without a Japanese company are how PCS cars become abandoned problems. Auction-style fraud patterns: don’t get scammed. Pay and title only through named companies (including us on kmcjapan.co.jp / kmccar.com).

Where we sit

Ogori is a planned trip from CFA Sasebo, not a gate shop: English dealer near Sasebo, military & foreign residents. Yokosuka, Misawa, Iwakuni, Okinawa: we can still talk export and some buybacks by email; your VRO still owns SOFA plates.

Not legal, tax, SOFA, or customs advice. Command and VRO/PMV documents override this page. We sell, buy, and export cars in English — we do not out-process your POV for the Navy.
