In Japan, “4WD” on a used lot can mean a kei with a rear coupling, a Jimny, a Subaru symmetrical AWD, or a crossover that mostly runs as a front-driver. They are not interchangeable. A wet Ogori ramp is not a Hokkaido blizzard, and 4WD does not replace winter tyres where snow is law or common sense.

This is a shortlist, not a magazine trophy. KMC JAPAN helps customers in Sasebo and across Kyushu find Japanese used cars, including affordable kei cars, compact cars, SUVs, minivans and hybrids. We source auctions from Ogori, Fukuoka — useful for Nagasaki hills and Kyushu rain, and still able to bid nationwide lots if you need a snow-belt Subaru. Tell us the climate, not just “4WD.”

Shortlist a 4WD View inventory

Tall Japanese kei wagon on a steep wet residential street
Kyushu family 4WD is often a kei on a wet slope — not a Prado.

Pick the job first

  • Sasebo / Nagasaki / Fukuoka rain and ramps — kei 4WD or a light crossover. Family bodies: family cars in Japan
  • Ski weekends / Nagano / Tohoku / Hokkaido posting — Subaru, RAV4-class, real winter tyres, underbody rust on the sheet
  • Unpaved forestry tracks — Jimny or a proper 4WD van; a Vezel is not a tractor

Heavier SUVs pay more 重量税 at shaken: shaken 2026. Kei vs regular: kei vs regular.

Kei 4WD — the volume play

Honda N-BOX / N-WGN 4WD, Daihatsu Tanto / Taft 4WD, Suzuki Spacia / Hustler 4WD

Cheap tax, tiny garage, extra drive to the rear when the coupling bites. Enough for mossy concrete and a winter morning in Kyushu. Not enough to skip tyres on packed snow. Check CVT, rear-drive bits, and rust on coastal cars. Budget band: under ¥500,000 is often 2WD — pay more for a clean 4WD kei.

Suzuki Jimny (kei)

The honest small 4WD. Slow, thirsty for its size, huge resale, easy to export. Look at underbody, transfer, and whether it has been used as a toy. A lifted Jimny with no 修復歴 story is still a sheet you should read: R / RA.

Compact hatches and wagons with 4WD

Honda Fit / Shuttle 4WD, Toyota Aqua 4WD (some years), Passo / Boon 4WD

Quiet extra help on wet hills without SUV parking. Fuel is better than a Forester. Confirm the grade actually says 4WD — many Fits are FWD.

Crossovers Japanese families actually buy

Toyota RAV4, Honda Vezel / ZR-V, Nissan X-Trail, Mazda CX-5 / CX-8

Highway, kids, a bit of snow with proper tyres. AWD systems differ (on-demand vs more full-time). Inspect tyres, undercover plastic, and hybrid battery if it is a hybrid AWD. 車庫証明 is still your city’s problem: parking certificate.

Subaru Forester, Impreza / XV (Crosstrek)

The snow-belt default. Head gaskets and rust on older examples are why the sheet and a compression story matter. We will not rubber-stamp a cheap Forester from a coastal auction without photos of the rails.

Vans and “real” 4WD

Mitsubishi Delica D:5, older Pajero, Toyota Land Cruiser Prado

Space and capability — also fuel, parts, and 重量税. Fine if you need them; wasteful as a Hakata school run. Export demand can keep prices high.

What 4WD will not fix

CFA Sasebo hills: kei 4WD is often enough; we are not a Navy vendor — affordable near the base. English desk: English-speaking dealer. Kyushu buying: buy in Kyushu.

Tell us 2WD vs 4WD, snow vs rain, kei vs SUV, and remaining shaken. Auction cars are as-is on the sheet. This is not a safety rating or a tyre-law summary for your prefecture.
