¥500,000 in Japan is a real shopping band — but it is usually the car number, not the keys-in-hand number. Recycle, consumption tax where it applies, name change, plates, and a shaken that is about to expire can push the bill well past “50 man.”
KMC JAPAN helps customers in Sasebo and across Kyushu find Japanese used cars, including affordable kei cars, compact cars, SUVs, minivans and hybrids. Under this budget, SUVs, minivans, and late hybrids are uncommon unless they are old, high-mileage, or due for inspection. We work from Ogori, Fukuoka and explain auction grades in English. We cannot freeze auction prices; stock in this band changes daily.
What ¥500,000 usually buys
- A kei (軽自動車) with some years and kilometres on it, often with shaken still showing
- An older Passo / Vitz / Fit if the sheet is clean and you accept age
- Rarely a “nice” Aqua, N-BOX Custom, or family minivan unless something is wrong on the sheet

Kei cars that show up in this band
Daihatsu Mira / Move / Tanto
The volume play. Mira and Move if you are mostly solo; Tanto if you need height and a sliding door. Look at CVT behaviour, sliding-door tracks, and rust on coastal cars.
Suzuki Alto / Wagon R / Spacia
Alto is the cheapest honest city car. Wagon R and Spacia add headroom. 4WD helps in snow and costs more to feed.
Nissan Dayz / Mitsubishi eK / Honda Life (older)
Common, parts everywhere, easy to sell to the next resident. Skip examples with unexplained auction codes you cannot read.
Honda N-WGN / older N-BOX
N-BOX is the family default; clean late ones often sit above ¥500,000. Older or high-km boxes can still land in band. Check door motors and underbody.
Regular plates that sometimes fit
Toyota Passo (Daihatsu Boon twin)
Often the lowest regular-car sticker. You still need 車庫証明 in most cities — kei tax does not apply.
Older Toyota Vitz / Honda Fit
Usable if shaken has time left. A Fit with inspection due next month is not a ¥500,000 bargain.
Older Toyota Aqua
Fuel is cheap; purchase is not always. Many Aquas that still feel “new enough” have already left this budget. If one appears, read rust and hybrid battery age on the sheet — in English with us if you need it.
The traps that blow the budget
- Shaken due in weeks — inspection can cost more than the discount you “saved”
- Windshield vs 乗り出し — ask for the drive-away total before you bid
- Accident or flood codes you cannot decode without an auction desk
- European badges — parts and the next buyer will not love you

How to shop this budget with KMC JAPAN
- Write “under ¥500,000, kei or small compact, remaining shaken if possible”
- We shortlist stock or auctions and explain the grade in English
- You visit Ogori if you can (Kurume ~15–25 min, Tosu ~10–20 min, CFA Sasebo ~1.5–2 h)
- We settle 乗り出し and, for residents, name change — not a Tokyo walk-in lot
Sasebo households: affordable cars near Sasebo Navy Base. When you leave: sell before leaving Japan. Buyback: kmccar.com.
This is shopping guidance, not a price list or tax advice. Auction and lot prices move; we quote a specific car only after we see the sheet.
