How to Import a Japanese Used Car to the UK

Intermediate 8-12 weeks 1 views Country Guides Updated 16 August 2026

The UK has no 8-year ban. You still need HMRC NOVA within 14 days, VAT/duty, vehicle approval (often IVA), then DVLA registration. Southampton is the usual RoRo port.

Open RHD market, process gates — not an age ban. File NOVA within 14 days of arrival. You cannot register with DVLA until HMRC has processed it. Keep the original Japanese export certificate for IVA. Official guide: GOV.UK: importing vehicles into the UK. KMC notes: UK import regulation page.

Who this guide is for

Private buyers and dealers importing an unmodified right-hand-drive Japanese used car through Southampton (London Gateway, Immingham, and Bristol are alternatives). This is not Kenya: there is no 8-year KEBS cap.

What you must still pass

  • Customs entry (C88/MRN) before NOVA completes.
  • NOVA — Notification of Vehicle Arrivals to HMRC within 14 days.
  • VAT and any UK Global Tariff due on the HMRC value (cars often 10% duty outside reliefs — confirm GOV.UK/HMRC). VAT is 20% for many private imports.
  • Vehicle approval — typically Individual Vehicle Approval (IVA) via DVSA if you do not have a suitable CoC. Japanese export certificates are used as evidence of comparable standards for many IVA items if the car is unmodified (DVSA IVA scheme guide).
  • Then DVLA registration (V55/5), £55 registration fee, vehicle tax, plates. DVLA may inspect.

Shipping

Japan–UK RoRo is often 35–50 days. Add IVA booking time (can be several weeks). Budget 8–12 weeks overall. Do not modify lighting or the speedometer before IVA if you rely on the export certificate.

Read HMRC INF106 (PDF) alongside the GOV.UK pages.

Typical order of work

  1. Buy an unmodified JDM car. Keep the original export certificate.
  2. RoRo to Southampton (or agreed UK port).
  3. Customs MRN; pay duty/VAT as due.
  4. NOVA within 14 days.
  5. IVA (or other approval).
  6. Wait 48 hours after NOVA confirmation, then DVLA register and tax.

Mistakes

  • Missing the 14-day NOVA window — DVLA will not register; late penalties can apply.
  • Shipping a converted or heavily modified car and expecting a straightforward IVA.
  • Using East Africa “2× FOB” as a UK tax estimate.

United Kingdom import FAQs

No East-Africa-style age ban. You still need customs, NOVA within 14 days, vehicle approval (often IVA), and DVLA registration. Vehicles 10+ years can have an easier approval path, but HMRC notification still applies.

Notification of Vehicle Arrivals. You must tell HMRC within 14 days of bringing a vehicle into the UK permanently. DVLA will not register until NOVA is processed. See GOV.UK importing vehicles into the UK.
