Choosing a Japanese Used Car for Export
Match steering, age rule, and auction grade to the destination. Kenya 2019+, Tanzania manufacture year, Uganda 15 years, Bangladesh ~5 years.
The right car is the one that is legal at destination, not the one with the prettiest auction photos. Start with the country’s age and steering rules, then grade, then budget.
Steering and traffic side
Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, Bangladesh, Mozambique, UK, Japan domestic — RHD. Angola is LHD. Do not buy the wrong-hand car “to convert later” unless that market has a legal conversion path.
Age: manufacture vs first registration
- Kenya — first registration, hard 8-year ban (2019+ in 2026), manufacture within 1 year of first registration.
- Tanzania — manufacture year; extra excise if older than 8 years.
- Uganda — 15 years from manufacture.
- Bangladesh — typically 5 years from manufacture (shorter for some NRB channels).
- Zambia / Mozambique — no hard passenger ban; tax changes with age.
Auction grade and use
Grade 4 / 4.5 / 5 cars are the usual export sweet spot. Grade 3 and below need honest photos of defects. Match body type to the corridor: Hilux and Land Cruiser for Zambia dirt roads; Voxy/Serena for Kenya families; Allion/Axio volume for Bangladesh — still inside the age cap.
When you have a chassis, we check it against that country’s regulation page before you bid.
