Sasebo sits in Nagasaki Prefecture. Typical driving times (traffic varies):

  • Sasebo city lots — minutes to about 30 minutes from the main gate area
  • Nagasaki / Huis Ten Bosch corridor — roughly 1 hour
  • KMC JAPAN in Ogori (Fukuoka) — about 1.5–2 hours by car, or train via Hakata/Futsukaichi then a short pickup

1. On-base / SOFA classifieds

Facebook groups, barracks boards, and “POV for sale” ads are common. Pros: the car may already be set up for base life; you can inspect it after work. Cons: you inherit someone else’s maintenance, and the handover still has to match current base registration rules. Get the 車検証, shaken date, and accident history in writing. If the seller is PCSing in a hurry, walk away from missing papers.

2. Local Sasebo and Nagasaki dealers

Japanese shops along Route 35 and in the city will sell kei cars (軽自動車) and compact Toyotas/Hondas. Staff may have limited English. Ask clearly about:

  • Shaken remaining (車検)
  • Whether the price is “noridashi” (乗り出し) — on-the-road with tax, recycle fee, and registration
  • Who files the name change (名義変更)

Japanese plates vs base / SOFA plates

Two different systems exist. Mixing them up is the usual first-week mistake.

  • Japanese registration — 車検証, shaken, shaken insurance (自賠責), parking certificate (車庫証明) for most regular cars, and a local address. Off-base apartments often need a landlord stamp for parking.
  • SOFA / PMV registration — processed through the base. Requirements, insurance, and whether you may buy a Japanese-plated car then convert (or must buy a certain way) are set by the base, not by the dealer. Read the current PMV brief before you pay a deposit.

What size of car works in Sasebo

Kei cars (軽) are cheap to tax and easy to park. Regular compact cars (Fit, Note, Yaris, Raize) are better if you drive to Fukuoka or carry family. Check your building’s garage height and width before you fall in love with a boxy minivan.
