How to Locate the Chassis Number on a Japanese Auction Sheet
Auction inspection sheets (USS, TAA, CAA, JU, HAA, MIRIVE) and Japanese deregistration certificates (抹消登録証明書) follow standard formats. Use the diagram below to find your number:
Manufacture Year (製造年) vs. First Registration (初度登録)
Crucial for Customs ClearanceUnderstanding the distinction between a car's actual manufacture date and its first Japanese registration date is the single most critical factor in preventing port customs impoundment, hefty age-penalty fines, or mandatory re-export when importing Japanese vehicles:
Manufacture Date
The exact calendar date the vehicle physically finished assembly and rolled off the factory production line in Japan.
- Binding: Used exclusively by customs worldwide for age limits.
- Source: Automaker factory databases & MLIT/JAMA records.
First Registration
The date license plates were first issued and Japanese road tax/shaken inspection was completed for Japanese road use.
- Rejected: Most customs authorities reject this for age calculations.
- Timing: Typically 1 to 6+ months after manufacture.

What it represents
実質的な意味
|
The exact calendar day/month the car left the factory assembly line in Japan. | The date Japanese road tax was first paid and license plates issued. |
|
Official Japanese term
日本語表記
|
製造年月 (Seizō Nengetsu) / 製作年月 (Seisaku Nengetsu)
|
初度登録年月 (Shodo Tōroku) or 初度検査年月 (for Kei vehicles)
|
|
Where it is documented
記載・証明場所
|
Automaker internal production databases, JAMA/MLIT registry, Manufacturer Certificate of Origin, and KMC JAPAN Official Lookup. | Printed on Japanese 車検証 (Registration Certificate), Export Certificate (輸出抹消), and Japanese Auction Sheets (出品票). |
|
Timing difference
時期のズレ
|
Earlier date — this is the true baseline for the vehicle's physical age. | Typically 1 to 4 months after manufacture. For showroom, dealer stock, or year-end units, can be 6 to 12+ months later. |
|
Customs compliance
税関・輸入規制
|
Required Used by customs in Kenya, Australia, USA, Canada, UK, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, and Uganda to calculate legal import age limits. | Not Accepted Most customs authorities and inspection agencies reject the registration date as proof of vehicle age if an age limit applies. |
|
Pre-shipment inspection
事前船積検査 (QISJ / JEVIC)
|
Inspecting agencies (QISJ, JEVIC, EAA, Bureau Veritas) verify the chassis against manufacturer records to issue age-compliance roadworthiness certificates. | Inspection agencies will downgrade the model year to the manufacture date on the export inspection certificate if discrepancy exists. |
|
Importer risk level
輸入時の法的リスク
|
Zero Risk: 100% compliant with destination country import age statutes. | Extreme Risk: Risk of port rejection, auction loss, heavy demurrage, or vehicle confiscation and crushing. |
Real-World Trap: The "Year-End Production Gap"
Consider a Toyota Harrier manufactured in Japan in November 2017, but first delivered and registered by a dealership in Tokyo in March 2018 (Heisei 30):
H30/3 (2018/03) on the Japanese auction sheet and assumes the car is compliant under an 8-year import age limit (e.g. Kenya) through 2026.
MXU...) against Toyota factory production records: the true manufacture date is November 2017. The vehicle exceeds the 8-year limit and is denied entry at port.
